Trenwyth's Newest Sustainable Recycled Masonry Unit Features the Look of Terrazzo

Designed to give specifiers the edge in Green Building, Verastone® Plus recycled filled and polished concrete masonry units is another example of Trenwyth Industries’ commitment to the environment and the development of sustainable solutions in order to achieve design excellence. Verastone® Plus recycled filled and polished concrete masonry units offer a smooth terrazzo look on one or more faces. After the initial grinding process to expose the variegated color of the natural aggregates, the pores and interstices are filled with a cementitious grout. The exposed faces are then polished smooth in a multi-stage polishing process and a factory-applied clear satin gloss acrylic is applied to accentuate the natural beauty of the aggregates and provide moisture resistance.
The Career Technology Education Center (C-TEC), located in Newark, Ohio, USA, is a fine example of the sustainability and application flexibility of recycled Verastone Plus. C-TEC was designed to provide career counseling, business and industry training, as well as an adult education. Approached by Rick Orr, Facility Manager and Owner’s Representative for C-TEC, L. Robert Kimball & Associates, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, soon became the architectural mastermind of this building plan. Verastone Plus was used extensively throughout the interior and exterior C-TEC’s providing the look of a smooth terrazzo finish; but providing the sustainability of concrete.

The permanently sealed, terrazzo-like finish resists staining, abrasion, impact and chemicals – even acid rain. Easy to clean and virtually maintenance free, Verastone Plus lasts the life of the building – no need to refinish. In addition, the one-step, single-trade installation of finished load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls saves both time and money. Depending on the thickness and internal configuration of the block, Verastone Plus offers up to a 4-hour fire rating.
